Chicago’s Ukrainian Village was the first area in the city to receive an official neighborhood designation. The area was settled by German and Polish immigrants after the Great Chicago Fire, and quickly grew an immense Ukrainian population – topping at over 30,000 in just a half square mile. This history is preserved by the city; the neighborhood was designated as a Chicago Landmark District in 2004.
However, though its roots are evident in the three gorgeous cathedrals (including one Ukrainian Orthodox) and countless Ukrainian-owned businesses, the Village has undergone a transformation into one of the city’s most hip, up-and-coming neighborhoods. New parents are a highly represented demographic, with access to the highly-rated Columbus Elementary and Robert Clemente High Schools. Ukrainian Village is a hub for local business, where microbreweries, coffee shops, boutiques, and local eateries abound. Real estate in the neighborhood is also plentiful, leaning toward new construction condos and homes, but with historic single-family homes and two- and three-flats available as well.
